Who is the hero of this book?

One name, one photo. We paint your child into every page and email the finished book.

In the story
One clear photo of their face
  • The photo is never sold, shown, shared or used to train anything. It is deleted when the book is made, or after 48 hours if you don't order.
  • A person checks every page. Not happy with the likeness? We redo it once, free, or refund you.
  • Your PDF arrives by email within 24 hours, usually sooner. Print at home or at any copy shop.

What's inside

Everything in the book

  • The feelings wheel

Eight feelings, eight faces, all theirs. The page that gets laminated and stuck on the fridge.

  • Eight calm-down cards

Your child doing each one: squeeze, stomp, hug, drink, hum, rock, draw, jump.

  • Two breathing pages

Balloon breathing and snake breathing, with your child doing them beside Tuck.

  • A calm corner sign

"[Name]'s Calm Corner", for the wall.

How we made it

Built on research, not guesswork

We read the published work of child psychologists, pediatricians and early-childhood researchers first, then wrote and drew the pages to put it into practice at home.

Who it's for

  • Parents whose child will not use a feelings chart with a stranger's face on it
  • Teachers and counselors making a calm corner for one particular child

What it puts into practice

  • Seeing yourself do the hard thing: children are more likely to try a behaviour they have watched themselves do (self-modelling, Dowrick's research on video self-modelling)
  • Name the feeling before trying to fix it (Gottman's emotion coaching)
  • Name the feeling before trying to fix it: a feelings wheel a child can point at when talking is too hard
  • Turtle-style calming: stop, go inside your shell, breathe, come out and solve
  • Breathing a young child can follow from a picture (balloon, star, hot cocoa and snake breathing)
  • Calm, short parent scripts that tell a child you are staying (“You're safe. I'm right here.”)
  • Practice on a calm day, so the tools are familiar before the meltdown

Sources

  • The Turtle Technique (Schneider & Robin), as used in the Pyramid Model preschool curriculum from Vanderbilt's Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL)

Questions

Still curious?

  • The tools are the same. The difference is the face: this edition paints your child into the wheel, the cards and the breathing pages, which for many children is what makes them use it.
